Father Ed Everitt

Fr. Edward E. Everitt, OP, Pastor of Holly Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond Louisiana, died Monday, July 11, 2011, in Waveland MS. Father Everitt was 71 years old.
He was born on October 31, 1939, in Houston, TX.

Fr. Everitt joined the Dominicans in 1961 where he was originally a member of the St. Albert the Great Province. He professed simple vows on Aug. 31, 1962 at St. Peter the Martyr Priory in Winona, MN and professed solemn vows on Aug. 31, 1965 also at St. Peter.

On Aug. 1, 1967, he was ordained to the Diaconate in Dubuque, IA and to the Priesthood on May 25, 1968. In 1980, he joined the St. Martin de Porres Province.

Fr. Everitt held Philosophy and Theology degrees from the Dominican House of Studies in Dubuque, IA. Also he had a BA/M.Th from Aquinas Institute in Dubuque and a Ed.D. from East Texas State University in Marriage and Family Counseling.

Fr. Everitt began his priestly career as a teacher at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, IL for three years. In 1969, he became Chaplain and teacher at Edgewood High School in Madison, WI. For one year during his time at Edgewood, he also served as Campus Minister of the University of Wisconsin.
 
In 1973, Fr. Everitt began one of the first of his ministries in Louisiana as Campus Minister for Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA where he served for the next six years.
 
Returning to his home state of Texas, Fr. Everitt served for the next two years at the University of Texas at San Antonio Medical Center in San Antonio as the Campus Minister. In 1983, Fr. Everitt became Director of the Office of Campus Ministry for the Archdiocese of San Antonio and then Director of Office of Clergy Development for the Archdiocese.
 
From 1989-1995, Fr. Everitt served as Pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Atlanta, GA. Following this assignment he became superior of the St. Peter Community in Memphis, TN and pastor of the St. Peter Parish. He would serve as pastor for the next eight years.
 
In August 2006, Fr. Everitt began what would be his last ministry becoming the Pastor of Holy Ghost Parish in Hammond, LA and Pastor of Our Lady of Pompeii in Tickfaw, LA.

Surviving are siblings, Shirley Ann E. Kilgore, Muriel E. Kessler, Joseph D. Everitt, Grace Emma E. Vaughn, John W. Everitt.
He is preceded in death by parents, Joseph L. and Catherine Rohrer Everitt.
Friends will be received Friday, July 15, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Holy Ghost Catholic Church.

Services will be held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Interment of Cremains in the Dominican Friar's Cemetary Columbarium, Rosaryville, LA at a future date.

Japanese quake’s epicenter located near Marian apparition site

 

The epicenter of the earthquake is located near the site of an apparition in which Mary warned about a worldwide disaster that could afflict humanity. In 1973, the Virgin Mary was said to have predicted a number of future events - including natural disasters even more serious than Friday's earthquake and tsunami - during three appearances to a Japanese religious sister, Sr. Agnes Sasagawa.
