St. Mary Magdalene Group Celebrates New and Professing Members

Good News

Each year on the Feast of St. Dominic, the St. Mary Magdalene Group of Lay Dominicans, Raleigh, NC celebrates the welcoming of new members as Candidates and the Rites of Profession for members who desire to grow more deeply in the Dominican way of life.  This August, Fr. Jude Siciliano, OP presided at Mass held in our regular meeting place, the St. Martin de Porres Priory in Raleigh.  Our Laity group was joined by all the friars, who have graciously made the building up of the Dominican Laity part of their mission as a community.  We gathered as members of the Family of Dominic, each one of us called in our own way to a life of preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ – life in God’s reign.

We are privileged to announce that three Candidates made their Temporary Profession.  Sally Sherman, Pat Mahoney, and Judy Klimcheck. Two Inquirers were accepted as Candidates of the Order, ready to make their first commitment to live by the Rule and Directory for Lay Dominicans of the Province of St. Martin de Porres.  Monica Lavia and Gabriele Monetti now wear the Dominican cross--a reminder of the community and its life in Christ. The faith of these five people brings new energy to our group as we practice together the four pillars of Dominican life--prayer, study, community, and mission.
The St. Mary Magdalene Group of Lay Dominicans meets monthly for mid-afternoon prayer, lectio divina, the sacred reading of scripture, shared preaching, study and evening prayer with the friars.  Newcomers are always welcome.  Before the regular meeting, Inquirers gather to learn more about the life of the Order, while Candidates are continuing their formation in a course, "Preparing and Delivering a Preaching.

We offer a yearly retreat for continuing formation entitled, "The Spirituality of the Preacher."  Clearly we have been blessed to receive new members.  Our community thrives by sharing the Word of God.

Japanese quake’s epicenter located near Marian apparition site

The epicenter of the earthquake is located near the site of an apparition in which Mary warned about a worldwide disaster that could afflict humanity. In 1973, the Virgin Mary was said to have predicted a number of future events - including natural disasters even more serious than Friday's earthquake and tsunami - during three appearances to a Japanese religious sister, Sr. Agnes Sasagawa.
