John Malachy Cosgrove, O.P.
1931-2011
Friar John Malachy Cosgrove was born on Jan. 4, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA. At the age of 79 on Feb. 25, 2011, he died quietly at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center in New Orleans, LA.
Malachy joined the St. Joseph Province of the Dominican Order with the wish to be a cooperator brother in 1953 completing his novitiate year at Immaculate Conception Priory in Washington, D.C. He professed simple vows on Nov. 24, 1953 at Immaculate Conception, and made Solemn Profession at Holy Name Church in Philadelphia, PA on Nov. 24, 1959.
Remaining in Philadelphia for the next 11 years, Malachy did various domestic ministries at Holy Name Priory. For the next year, he was a missionary in Chimbote, Peru.
From 1966-1973, Malachy was the Shrine Sacristan at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT. Returning to Philadelphia in mid-1973 until 1980, Malachy was the Business Manager of the Holy Name Priory.
In 1980, Malachy joined he newly formed Province of St. Martin de Porres and was assigned to domestic ministry at St. Dominic Priory in New Orleans, immediately followed by the same duties at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, TX.
From 1981-1984, Malachy lived at St. Mark Priory and pursued further education at the University of Houston where he took studies to become a counselor. In 1984, Malachy embarked on his first try at prison ministry. For the next four years, he counseled at the Harris County Rehabilitation Center in Humble, TX. For the next year, Malachy worked at Magnificat House in Houston. In 1989, he returned to Harris County and would work there fore the next nine years.
After a year’s sabbatical in Rhode Island, Malachy did no more outside ministry due to deteriorating health. In 2000, he moved to Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center where he remained until his death.
