Our Ministries

Ministry to the People and Church in the South

As Dominicans, we continue the 800 year legacy of St. Dominic and focus all our ministries on preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the salvation of souls. Dominican preaching, however, includes much more than liturgical preaching (within the context of Mass). In addition to preaching during the liturgy, Dominicans preach in a variety of other ministerial settings, including:

Academia & Education: Educational institutions are one of the primary places where our life vision and values take shape. From the very beginning of the Order of Preachers in 1216, Dominicans have established themselves in a variety of academic environments and institutions. Whether teaching in the classroom, leading an academic department or running the school the friars preach the Gospel as they create an environment where students come to understand and live the Dominican motto of Veritas - truth. In doing so, the Dominican tradition continues to make a unique and significant contribution to the life and concerns of contemporary centers of learning.

Our friars teach and minister to students at academic institutions throughout the United States and the world, including:

  • Barry University
  • Aquinas Institute of Theology
  • Xavier University of Louisiana
  • Christian Brothers University
  • St. Thomas Aquinas University - The Angelicum (Rome)
  • John Paul II High School

Campus Ministry: Our friars continue the Order's historical commitmentto providing an educated Catholic presence on university campuses. Ascampus ministers, they preach, teach catechetical programs and explorethe relations between science and faith and between religion and thearts. The friars of our Province staffs campus ministry centers on numerous collegecampuses including,

  • Barry University
  • Tech University (August 2010)
  • Tulane University
  • Duke University

    • New Orlean, LA: St. Anthony of Padua Church  and St. Dominic Catholic Church

    • Memphis, TN: St. Peter Catholic Church
  • Texas
    • Irving, TX: St. Albert the Great Chapel
    • Houston: Holy Rosary Catholic Church

Mass Communications and the Arts: Many of our friars publish theological and spiritual works in books, professional journals, on the web and popular magazines. Other friars within the Province involve themselves in electronic media through radio, television and film production.

Diocesan Ministries: Some of our friars work closely with local chanceries as assistants to bishops, on diocesan curiae as canonists, as promoters of peace and justice, and community service organizers.

Special Chaplaincies: Approximately one-third of our friars are assigned to special chaplaincies. These ministries strive to promote the well-being of those who are on the fringes of society: the sick, the poor, the elderly, the displaced, the imprisoned, and other marginalized populations. These ministries include prison, hospital chaplains and military chaplains.

Japanese quake’s epicenter located near Marian apparition site

The epicenter of the earthquake is located near the site of an apparition in which Mary warned about a worldwide disaster that could afflict humanity. In 1973, the Virgin Mary was said to have predicted a number of future events - including natural disasters even more serious than Friday's earthquake and tsunami - during three appearances to a Japanese religious sister, Sr. Agnes Sasagawa.
